Trend To Try: Go Grunge
Posted on April 27 2022
Break out your oversized flannel and chunky combat boots—we’re going grunge. The ‘90s beauty revival doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, so we’ve decided that there’s no sense in fighting it. The most recent comeback? Grunge. While today’s revival has elements of the past like earthy shades of brown, lots of lip liner, heavy eyes, and standout pouts, it’s 100% more wearable for everyday.
Keep scrolling for our favorite old-but-new takes on the grunge makeup trend.
A Glossy Brown Lip
Forgo the matte brown pout of the Nirvana era, and instead add a heavy dose of gloss to create a grunge (yet sophisticated) statement lip.
Try it: Lip Color in Chocolate Cherry + Sheer Gloss in Crystal
Smudged Smokey Eye
Get the lived-in look by using black eyeliner to line your entire eye and slightly smudging it out with a cotton swab or makeup sponge—add dark brown and nearly black eyeshadow to complete the look.
Try it: Classic Eyeliner in Black, Eyeshadow in Chocolate Brown + Mineral Eyeshadow in Gem
Loads of Lip Liner
Nothing says “major '90s moment” like heavy-handed deep brown lip liner—top yours off with a shimmering nude gloss for an edgy look.
Try it: Classic Lip Liner in Chestnut + Sheer Gloss in Liquid Bliss
All Brown Everything
Pay homage to the music-turned-fashion movement by creating a monochrome brown look featuring a muted mauve brown lip, soft rosy brown blush, and rich brown eye colors.
Try it: Lip Pencil in Innocence, Lipstick in Matte Cerise, Powder Blush in Rose, Classic Eyeliner in Chocolate Brown + Mineral Eyeshadow in Espresso
A Matte Wine Pout
Inject a little glam into your grunge in the form of deeply stained wine lips, fresh skin, and a subtly lined eye.
Try it: Lipstick in Meritage + Eye Defining Pencil in Tobacco
