13 Mascara Tips You Need To Know

PSA: you don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to have lashes that seriously wow. You can create an eye-catching look all on your own just by swiping on a few coats of mascara, with a little help from our favorite life-changing lash tips, tricks, and hacks.

Wiggle Why You Work
A simple swipe is not enough—you should always move the mascara wand in a zigzag motion while you’re applying to keep your lashes from sticking together. Simply wiggle the wand at the root of your lashes to initiate volume and then rotate your brush as you move it towards the tips.

Take It Back
Want super thick lashes? Coat both sides with mascara by first looking down and coating the backs of your lashes, then looking up and sweeping the brush upward from below.

Stop Smudges
To prevent mascara from transferring to your skin, apply primer (try our Eyeshadow Primer) to your eyelids and under eye area to minimize excess moisture and stop the product from smudging.

Reuse Old Wands
Don’t throw away those old wands! Instead, clean your old wands with makeup remover and reuse them to separate lashes after applying mascara—they’re basically a free lash comb. (Bonus: if you love a brush but not a formula, try using it with another mascara).

Never Ever Pump
Pumping your mascara wand pushes air into the product, drying it out and making it easier for bacteria to spread—pull the wand upward and gently twirl it to evenly distribute the product instead.

Bend the Brush
To reach those tiny lashes in the corner of your eyes, gently bend the brush to an angle and carefully move it back when you’re done. If you don’t want to do the bend, you can rotate the brush vertically to reach them.

Do Your Brows
If you need bold brows in a pinch or want to simplify how many beauty products you, pick up our Mascara in Black Brown. You can use it on your lashes and on your arches to beef them up and keep them in place.

Soak It Up
While you should never add water (or any other liquid) to your mascara, you can fix clumpy mascara by soaking the whole tube in a cup of hot water for a few minutes before you use it—just make sure it’s totally sealed.

Go Bespoke
One mascara not doing the trick? Try cocktailing your products by first applying a layer of lengthening and volumizing mascara and follow it up with a layer of curling mascara for extra oomph.

Prime Prime Prime
To boost any mascara payoff, start with a lash primer. It will help your mascara last longer, condition your lashes to prevent flaking or smudging, and add volume and length. (P.S. Our Luxe Mascara in Clear doubles as a great lash primer!).

Fake It ’Til You Make It
Use our Precision Liquid Liner in Raven to draw a thin line, dashes or dots on your lash line. This will give the illusion of thicker lashes without the help of fake lashes.

Layer Lightly
Apply several thin layers of mascara rather than one or two thick ones—we like to do a few layers at the beginning of our makeup routine and then one final coat as the final step.

Toss It Out
If your mascara is older than six months, it’s time for a new tube (you can send your empty ones to us for recycling). Because it’s used around the delicate eye area it’s one of the most important beauty products to replace regularly—using old or expired mascara can irritate or damage your eyes.
